As a General Surgeon, I have been privileged to serve the diverse communities of Southampton and the wider Wessex Region over five decades in NHS practice since the 1980s and as a Consultant in general and specialist practice on the staff of Southampton General Hospital and The Royal South Hants Hospital since 1999.
I have also been privileged to enjoy a career in public service in national representative roles for the British Association for Surgical Oncology; for the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland; and for the UK Defence Medical Services between 1975 and 2018, with operational tours in The Gulf (1991), Iraq (2003) and Helmand (2008).
As a Surgeon with a portfolio of Academic Interests, I have enjoyed a parallel career in research and teaching for the Faculties of Medicine of the Universities of Leicester (1994-1999) and Southampton (1988 to the present); and for Innovate UK and the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council since 2017. I have also been a privileged recipient of a Visiting Professorship of Southampton Solent University for my contributions to digital transformation across the University Hospitals of Southampton NHS Foundation Trust.
As a Clinical and Academic Leader at international level, I served as the Editor in Chief of the European Journal of Surgical Oncology (EJSO) between 2003 and 2009. I have since played a leading role in the quality assurance of the academic publishing ecosystem as the global Subject Chair for Medicine on the Advisory Board to the SCOPUS bibliometric system.
I stepped aside from specialist full time NHS surgical service at Southampton General in 2022 to focus on my academic interests, while retaining clinical and surgical sessions at the Practice Plus Group Surgical Hub at the historic Royal South Hants Hospital, where I contribute to an efficient rapid access surgical service in hernia and soft tissue surgery for patients from Southampton, The Isle of Wight, Winchester, Bournemouth and other regional catchments.
