We look at the challenges that stand in the way of providing effective treatment for pathological gynaecomastia in the UK public sector.
More than a decade ago, health policymakers considered a wide range of surgical procedures to be inappropriate for funding by the resource constrained NHS as they were deemed to be unnecessary, frivolous or cosmetic. These procedures included operations in many disciplines such as varicose vein surgery, ‘lifestyle’ hysterectomies, tattoo removal, various orthopaedic procedures and a range of breast operations. The latter included cosmetic breast augmentation and breast reduction, removal of breast implants, surgery for fibroadenomas and surgery for gynaecomastia
