Laser-scanning cytometry Technology has driven research in clinical pathology since the optical microscope was introduced more than 200 years ago. The rapid, reliable, and quantitative assessment of biological events in large numbers of individual cells finds important applications in experimental systems and clinical analysis, such as in immunophenotyping, in counting of CD4 cells in HIV infection, in DNA ploidy studies, and in the quantification of cell-membrane, cytoplasmic, and nuclear molecules.
